The emergence of a new Covid variant spooked the markets on Friday sending the Dow lower by nearly 1,000 points. That erased the small gains achieved earlier in the week, and then some. Friday's losses were the worst one-day decline this year. Staples were the best sector followed by utilities as investors moved to a risk off position.
